Fitz isn’t a typical Cambridge college. For a start, its main buildings are modern and red-brick. It admits more state school students than most. It prides itself on being friendly, down to earth and not claustrophobic or overwhelming. It’s set apart from the other colleges, a mile from King’s Parade at the top of Cambridge’s only hill (well, a shallow slope) next to New Hall in the city’s businessy area. The location may contribute to its sociable atmosphere – students have to make more of an effort than most to meet people outside the college walls.
