Emmanuel College, Cambridge

Emma (as Emmanuel’s affectionately known), 500m from King’s Parade, is a collection of dignified 16th-century buildings, 60s accommodation blocks, elegant landscaped gardens and a duck pond, replete with resident ducks. It’s a progressive place as colleges go – Emma’s students are allowed to walk on the grass and its Wren-designed chapel was the first in the Church of England to bless civil partnerships. Emmanuel’s notoriously hard-working students are nonetheless perceived by others as unpretentious, approachable party-lovers, who are well represented in University activities.
